Top Five Wrestling Matches Of 2018
2018 was one of the craziest years in Pro Wrestling history. Every corner of the globe is dripping with talent, so to filter this down into 5 matches was tough. So without further adieu, here is My Top Five Wrestling Matches Of 2018:
5. Moustache Mountain vs Undisputed Era - NXT Tag Titles @ WWE UK Tournament, June 19
Now lets get it out of the way: a lot of people prefer the rematch. But personally, for me this one stands out more because of the ferocious British Crowd, and with the rematch it was less of a surprise that Undisputed Era would take the titles back. Seven and Bate have both had a fantastic year, and really shown what they can do - and this match was certainly a high point for them both.
4. Becky Lynch vs Charlotte Flair - WWE Smackdown Womens Title @ Evolution, October 28th
Evolution fell into the category of “low expectations, high results”. Nobody went into Evolution thinking it was going to be as good as it was - it felt like an afterthought of a PPV with hardly any build up, a city with a notoriously bad wrestling crowd history, and quite a few big injuries going into the event leading to last minute changes. But the incredible WWE Womens division mixed with the fantastic production (I think the NXT crew were producing this one) led to the WWE event of the year. This match was an absolute barn burner, with both Charlotte and Becky putting their everything into it. This is one of those matches that we will talk about for YEARS as another glass ceiling smasher for the Womens Division.
3. WALTER vs Tyler Bate - Progress World Title @ Progress Hello Wembley September 30
Probably a bit of a personal one for me, as its the only one on this list that I was in attendance for. It was actually my first time seeing both of these guys in person, and they were incredible. The match was full of near falls, feats of strength, incredible grappling and a finish I absolutely couldn’t call. Both guys had their team mates at ringside, but they didn’t get involved - that for me is one of my favourite “big fight feel” details. The finish came down to Tyler pulling out everything he could, but WALTER just being too powerful. Great old school match.
2. Tomasso Ciampa vs Velveteen Dream - NXT Championship @ NXT:War Games, November 17
Honestly, every match at NXT:War Games could be considered a match of the year candidate. But I only want to put one match from there on this list - and that match is Tomasso Ciampa vs Velveteen Dream. Every time I watch a Ciampa match it blows my mind, but a few weeks later I start doubting him. I start thinking that maybe he ISN’T that good. But then the next match comes along and he proves it yet again. This was also the biggest match for Velveteen Dream so far, and he is also another guy who brings his “A game” to every single match. It was full of story-telling, psychology, fantastic ring work, crazy near falls and the commentary especially was insane (Mauro Ronallo is a god damn treasure). The rolling death valley driver onto the NXT Title was the most sure I have every been that a match was about to be over. INSANE match.
1. Kenny Omega vs Kazuchika Okada - Best 2 out of 3 falls - IWGP Heavyweight Title @ Dominion, June 9.
Omega Okada IV. The fourth match in the greatest series of matches (in my opinion) of this generation. To rank the four matches, is a very hard task, it changes every day. But for me, personally this was the best match. BUT it is only the best match if you watch the other three first, it was full of so many throwbacks to previous matches that it makes this title match the ultimate blow off. If you can’t already tell, I am a huge fan of story-telling and near falls in wrestling matches; and these two guys are probably the best in the world at that style of wrestling and they went for over an hour in this classic bout. So for me, theres no question that this is the best match of 2018.
I thoroughly recommend you go and watch all these matches, if you haven’t already. And I would love to hear what your thoughts are on the best matches of the year.
