My Kid Loves Non-Toys

The Broom
Let me start off with the item of most annoyance, we try our hardest to hide the broom… but Rory will always find it. Now don’t get me wrong, it has its upsides – he is a very tidy toddler and will sweep up. But after that, it turns into a Three Stooges sketch. Rory is a small toddler, he’s short where this broom must be like triple the length of him. He puts it over his shoulder and walks around knocking everything everywhere. You literally have to dive out of the way, but my god he loves that broom.
Fanta Bottles
The first thing I can remember Rory having an obsession with was Fanta bottles. When he was a newborn, you could just roll one around on the floor and he would watch it non-stop. Even now he will go crazy when he spots a bottle of Fanta somewhere.
Fabric Drawers
We have a unit in our living room that has these fabric drawers that pull out. They are cubes and there are 6 of them. Rory will pull these out, empty the contents, and either sit in one to watch TV or put it over his head and run around the room blind. Heh purposely aims for the wall. This is my son.
The Bin
Like with the Drawers, he will roll one of the empty bins into the room get in it and just stand there watching TV. He has also worked out that if he dives on it when it is on its side, he will roll and go flying. Rory is a daredevil.
His shadow
Yup. My son is a smart kid. I’m serious. He was going up and down the stairs at a really early age, he mastered walking really quickly, he is great at communicating what he wants, he helps us with chores (putting clothes in the dryer, throwing rubbish in the bin, putting nappies in the nappy bin). He can do all these things – but he hasn’t worked out Shadows yet. He sees his shadow, he starts chasing it and trying to play with it. He’s god damn adorable. On a similar vein, he plays a game with the sun too. When he sees aa spot of sunlight coming through the window, he will stand in its way so its shining in his face and then complain that the sun is in his face. HE WILL PURPOSELY TRY HIS HARDEST TO MAKE SURE THE SUN IS IN HIS EYES SO HE CAN COMPLAIN. He’s the weirdest but I love him.
Car Keys
Finally, the car keys. He loves carrying them around because they make a great jingling noise. He also pushes the key into one of the notches on the baby gate because he thinks it will “unlock it”.
So those are just some of the weird and wonderful things Rory loves to play with. I love that he has such a huge imagination, and I love how busy he is.
What I want to know is – what strange objects do your kids obsess over?
